A Summer Like No Other: Rome Edition

Written by UD Admissions | Oct 22, 2025 5:20:55 PM

For the past 12 years, the university has offered a summer version of the cornerstone Rome Program for students who wouldn’t otherwise be able to experience it — athletes, seminarians, transfer students, bachelor of science majors and even students from other universities.

This year’s summer students had the privilege of taking Philosophy of the Human Person taught by President Jonathan J. Sanford. Teaching the class over an intensive three-week period, Dr. Sanford delivered onsite lectures atop the Aventine Hill in Rome as well as multiple locations in Athens, and he even presided over the traditional Greek Olympic games in which students participate each semester.

“Surprisingly and delightfully, though they are such a mix, the summer Romers tend to become even tighter as a group.”

DR. ANDREW MORAN

Dr. Andrew Moran, director of the summer Rome program, says that the intensity of the summer program and its unique combination of students result in new friendships among students who may never have even met on the Irving campus.

The summer program features trips to northern Italy and Greece, as well as many of the same Core classes included in the fall and spring Rome semesters. In addition to Philosophy of the Human Person, students take Western Civilization I taught this summer by Dr. Susan Hanssen, Western Theological Tradition with Dr. Irene Alexander and Literary Traditions III with Fr. Stephen Gregg.
