AI for Good: PediMinds Wins Big

Maria Gutierrez, MS ’25, is using artificial intelligence to serve one of the most sensitive areas of human need: children’s mental health. Her AI agent, PediMinds, guides caregivers through widely used screenings like the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9), offering personalized resources and actionable insights to support a child’s emotional well-being.

“The goal is to empower families to have informed conversations with their children,” Gutierrez said.

With guidance from Dr. Renita Murimi, professor of cybersecurity and entrepreneurship in the Satish & Yasmin Gupta College of Business, Gutierrez developed PediMinds to translate clinical research into accessible, family-centered care.

“Early intervention can transform a child’s well-being and future development.”

Her work earned first place at the inaugural DFW AI Agent Hackathon, where other UDallas students also excelled. Second place went to a team of undergraduate computer science majors who created a conversational AI travel agent that provides flight schedules and personalized activity recommendations based on a user’s chosen destination.

Together, these wins showcase UDallas’ distinctive approach to technology: pairing innovation with service and technical excellence with human-centered purpose.
