UDallas Scholar Honors Conrad on His Centenary

Dr. Debra Romanick Baldwin, professor of English, marked the centenary of Joseph Conrad’s passing with the publication of two major works: The Inwardness of Things: Joseph Conrad and the Voice of Poetry, a monograph resulting from decades of research, and The Routledge Companion to Joseph Conrad, an international collection that she edited featuring 28 essays from 12 countries.

She describes Conrad as “a writer’s writer” who “opens up the world in all its richness and mystery.” Drawn to him as a prescient writer who anticipated the geopolitics of the 20th and 21st centuries, she says, “He warned against the threat of autocracy, not just politically, but culturally, so I think he’s more important to read and study than ever.”

Romanick Baldwin’s work was nourished by the interdisciplinary intellectual culture at UDallas. “UDallas is a place where people cherish lively conversation, especially interdisciplinary conversation. So what better place to write a book about a modern voice in the ancient quarrel between the poets and the philosophers?”
