What Can You Gain From Going to Grad School? One MBA Student's Perspective
Are you wondering what you could gain from going to grad school and earning your MBA? Have you been contemplating whether the merits of obtaining a master’s degree are worth the time and expense? If so, you came to the right place! This blog will help you learn about the advantages of earning a graduate degree and how obtaining one can help your career. Let’s get started!
Hi, my name is Alex Bruno, and I work for the UDallas College of Business in the graduate programs office. In my role there, it is my purpose to introduce prospective students to the merits of going back to school to earn an MBA, and to explain to them how it is important to find a program that’s the right fit.
Understanding Your "Why"
The first thing I tell prospective grad students is to figure out their “why”. Why do you want to go to grad school? Knowing your “why” matters because if you are already juggling a full-time job, have family obligations at home, and are going to be paying out of your own pocket to go back to school for an MBA, you really need to be strong in your convictions as to why you want that MBA degree. According to an article in the Harvard Business Review, if your “why” is because you want to future-ready your career, to explore new industries, to accelerate your career path, or to expand and diversify your network, then earning an MBA could help you crush those objectives [1].
Figuring Out Your "When"
The next thing I help prospective grad students to figure out is “when". I’m often asked the question, “When is the best time to go to grad school?” Many people are blown away when I say there is no such thing as a “best time”. However, a great time is before the financial responsibilities of a household and family need to take priority in your life. According to an article in the Wall Street Journal, several admissions experts say it can be better financially to get an M.B.A. in your late 20s because you have more years of higher earning potential ahead of you [2].
